Nexus Studios are a world class animation and production studio based in London and LA. Having outgrown their former workspace, they appointed Feilden Fowles to carry our a full refurbishment of their new building, a 1960s office block near Old Street.
The 180-person London studio is home to Nexus’ Interactive Arts team, comprising of integrated producers, creative thinkers, animators, technical directors, coders, illustrators, designers and makers. This complex team required a wide range of facilities and environments including a green screen studio, edit suite, render farm and craft workshops to undertake all aspects of their animation productions in-house.
Feilden Fowles began by looking closely at the structure and interactions between Nexus’ creative teams to understand key relationships and define a new and exemplary spatial plan to encourage and nurture more fluid interaction between directors, production and studio teams. This organising element of the brief was crucial in order to streamline processes and deliver their exceptional films more efficiently.
Initially, the existing 1500m2 building was stripped back to reveal the concrete frame and floor finishes. A simple ribbon of Douglas fir plywood partitions was used to redefine the key zones and areas, with varying degrees of transparency and openness. Deep timber fins defined a regular grid, to permit storage through bookshelves or cupboards and in places are glazed or infilled with acoustic fabric to create meeting rooms. This economical yet flexible framework of partitions was easily and efficiently manufactured due to its modular nature, leading to a highly cost effective and adaptable solution.
Another layer of large sliding panels and curtains provide further flexibility to enclose or open up meeting spaces for smaller and larger groups. This system also allows for pin up and reviews to take place within the more public ‘central streets’ though the centre of the plan.
The new studio has enabled Nexus to grow from 100 to 180 staff over the past few years, and they continue to grow and innovate within their new space.
